Wieslaw Banys is the rector of the University of Silesia and President of the Conference of Rectors of Academic Schools in Poland (CRASP). He has worked in the fields of general linguistics and romance linguistics: semantic grammar, cognitive linguistics, cognitive computational lexicography, logical foundations of linguistics; applied linguistics: machine translation and computer-aided translation, electronic databases of specialised lexicons.
His main scientific achievements include the construction of a semantic theory in the form of logical calculus, a ‘cognitive map’, of the system of French language constructions expressing conditionality and implication, development of a theory of description of object-oriented language, integrating linguistic semantic hierarchies and concepts of frames and scripts. He has published three books and edited three books. He is the editor-in-chief of linguistic review Neophilologica, co-editor of five books, 61 papers, domestic and international fellowships, member of many scientific societies and associations. He has been honoured with the Golden Cross of Merit (PL), Officer’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (PL), Légion d’honneur, Doctor honoris causa of Pedagogical University of Cracow.
