  • About KU Leuven

KU Leuven-for websiteSituated in Belgium, in the heart of Western Europe, KU Leuven has been a centre of learning for nearly six centuries.
Today, it is Belgium's largest university and, founded in 1425, one of the oldest and most renowned universities in Europe. As a leading European research university and co-founder of the League of European Research Universities (LERU), KU Leuven offers a wide variety of international master’s programmes, all supported by high-quality, innovative, interdisciplinary research.

It is an autonomous university. In late 2011, it changed its name from ‘Katholieke Universiteit Leuven’ to ‘KU Leuven’ and elaborated its mission statement: KU Leuven endeavours to be a place for open discussion of social, philosophical, and ethical issues and a critical centre of reflection in and for the Catholic community. KU Leuven offers its students an academic education based on high-level research, with the aim of preparing students to assume their social responsibilities.
KU Leuven is a research-intensive, internationally oriented university that carries out both fundamental and applied research. It is strongly inter- and multidisciplinary in focus and strives for international excellence. To this end, KU Leuven works together actively with its research partners at home and abroad.

    About the city

Leuven-1-for-websiteLeuven is a pleasant, safe and bustling student town, where centuries-rich history meets cutting-edge science. Leuven has approximately 90,000 inhabitants. Add to these the 35,000 post-secondary and 11,000 secondary school students and it should come as no surprise that the streets are filled with young faces and that the city lives at a student's rhythm: hectic weeks at the beginning of the academic year and relative calm during vacation and examination periods.
Leuven is situated at the very heart of Europe, only 20 minutes from Brussels.
