Welcome from the Rector

Stephano Paleari_c Adverthype (1)

It is with great pleasure that I invite you to the University of Bergamo for the 2nd EUA Funding Forum in October 2014. I am proud and honoured to host an event, which will gather representatives of Europe’s universities and leading stakeholders.

The University of Bergamo is located in Lombardia, a region in Northern Italy with more than ten million inhabitants and one of the regions with the highest GDP pro capita in Europe. With a history older than the foundation of Rome, Bergamo grew as a key town in mediaeval times and is now a bridge between western and eastern Europe.

The University of Bergamo is a state university with about 16,000 students (undergraduates and graduates), and more than 300 PhD students. The number of students is increasing each year, with a 7% growth rate per year between 2001 and 2011. Our dedicated 656 staff members contribute to a dynamic scientific and teaching environment open to innovations.

The six departments and the research centres of the University of Bergamo are grouped into three different campuses. The Campus of Economics and Law is located in the City of Bergamo, at walking distance from the train station; the Campus of Humanities in the mediaeval upper town and the campus of Engineering, both in Dalmine, the industrial outskirts of Bergamo and inside the science park "Kilometro Rosso".

Our leadership team has a keen interest in the funding of universities, not least because after the budget cuts faced by the Italian university system, universities increasingly have to look elsewhere to maintain financial sustainability. The University of Bergamo has been active in this regard and has orchestrated a unique fund raising campaign “Adotta il talento” (Adopt the talent) this means that the best 10% of our students do not have to pay fees.

I am very much looking forward to welcoming you in Bergamo on the occasion of the 2nd EUA Funding Forum 2014; I am convinced that you, as active participants, will make the forum a successful and meaningful event.
