EUA Autumn Conference 2009

Internationalisation beyond Europe’s frontiers: enhancing attractiveness through global Partnership and Cooperation

8–10 October, University of Giessen, Germany

University of Giessen GermanyThe concept and scope of the ‘internationalisation’ of higher education has evolved at a rapid pace in the last decade. It has become relevant for institutions of all sizes and orientations, and is discussed with regard to all aspects of institutional missions.

The Autumn Conference in Giessen, Germany, is the European University Association’s (EUA) first conference devoted to the internationalisation of European higher education.

In an effort to review the present state of internationalisation in European higher education and research, the Conference will explore European universities’ relationship with partners around the globe, and examine good practice on how cooperation and dialogue may be fostered in spite of, and in conjunction with, competition, at a time of a major global economic downturn.

It will examine institutional strategies and approaches, and discuss institutional roles, responsibilities and pressures, to internationalise beyond Europe’s frontiers.

The conference will seek to

  • Demonstrate and assess various articulations of higher education internationalisation, considering the extent to which Europe’s internationalisation process can or should have a distinct profile, and what this means at institutional, national and European level
  • Emphasise the importance of embedding internationalisation into institutional missions
  • Discuss the roles and responsibilities of governments, institutions and organisations in promoting the further internationalisation of Europe’s universities
  • Consider the actual and potential impact of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) and the European Research Area (ERA) for the international relations of European HEI.

The conference will offer an excellent opportunity for European and international university representatives to meet and discuss cooperation and exchange in a stimulating environment.

It is hosted by the Justus Liebig University of Giessen, a modern and international university which looks back on 400 years of history.

Giessen can be reached conveniently via Frankfurt Airport. A conference shuttle bus service will be available.

The conference should be of interest to institutional leaders (rectors, vice rectors and heads of administration) as well as other organisations involved in educational policy: social partners, employers and senior government officials.
