    After a dramatic 13-hour vote for the presidency of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani from the European People’s Party has been elected as President. EUA sees the European Parliament as a key partner in promoting research and higher education in Europe and looks forward to be working together.


    The EUA Council on Doctoral Education (EUA-CDE) has just released the latest edition of its Bulletin. Normally reserved for members only, this special edition, “On the Cutting Edge of Research: The Open Access Challenge”, is openly available.


    Despite its regret about the UK leaving the EU, the European University Association (EUA) is pleased that UK Prime Minister Theresa May explicitly highlighted science, research and innovation in a much anticipated speech on Brexit given from London on 17 January 2017.


    EUA wishes all its readers a very Happy New Year and has many exciting policy and project-related activities and events planned for 2017.


    EUA has joined forces with four key European research organisations to call on legislators to modify current EU copyright reform proposals in order to allow Europe the opportunity to become a global leader in data-driven innovation and research.


    EUA members now have some extra time to participate in the latest edition of the Open Access survey. The goal is to develop a comprehensive view of the degree to which policies on Open Access have been developed and implemented in European universities. The deadline to respond is 28 February 2017.
