Symposium: Internationalisation of Universities and the National Language, 4 May 2018, Leuven, Belgium

07 February 2018

On 4 May 2018, the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KU Leuven) will organise an international symposium on the topic "Internationalisation of Universities and the National Language". This symposium fits into the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of KU Leuven as a Flemish university.

With the ever increasing internationalisation of universities and with it the dominance of the English language, the fear arises that national languages and cultures might be compromised. Is this fear justified? How do we deal with it? And what can we do about it?

During this symposium, we want to learn from testimonials from mainly European universities that are confronted with the (apparent) contradiction between internationalisation and the protection of their own language and culture. We should not expect one ultimate solution or a one-fits-all approach. What we do hope to find are guidelines on how to stay a leading international university without losing an important strength: the commitment to the own identity.

More information is available on the website of KU Leuven.
