New project to map application & implementation of European Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance

16 December 2010

EUA will participate in a new project that will look to map the current application and implementation of the European Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance (ESGs) across the 47 Bologna signatory countries.

The project will be coordinated by the European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (ENQA), as part of a project consortium formed by the E4 Group (ENQA, European Students’ Union, EUA and European Association of Institutions in Higher Education - EURASHE). The aim is to gather information on how the ESGs – adopted by ministers in 2005 following a proposal of the E4 Group – have been implemented and applied at various levels: European, national, institutional, and by QA agencies.

After five years of experience with implementing and applying the ESGs, there have been some suggestions that they should be revised. Nevertheless, as the authors of the original guidelines, the E4 organisations believe there is first a need for a thorough investigation of how the ESGs have been implemented and applied in relation to their original purposes and what new purposes may have been developed in the meanwhile. It is in this context that they have decided to launch this project to map the experiences of various stakeholders with regard to the ESGs and to collect their views on whether revision is needed.

The project will result in an E4 report to be submitted in 2012 to ministers for higher education and will make recommendations on the future of the ESGs.
