Second EUA DOC-CAREERS II Workshop held at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL)

16 December 2010

The second DOC-CAREERS II Workshop took place at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland on 9-10 December. DOC-CAREERS II workshops discuss new approaches in collaborative doctoral training with a strong regional focus, both from the perspective of the host university region and other European regions, and the ways and means available to improve university-business/external partner cooperation.

The EPFL workshop convenors, Professor Jacques Giovanola and Dr Verity Elston (EPFL Graduate School) set the scene concerning the evolving context regarding doctoral education and the EPFL experience with doctoral programmes and specifically in collaboration with businesses. Sessions focused on doctoral projects in Science/Engineering/Technology and Biomedical/Life Sciences areas. The specific topics for discussion were university-business joint supervision and monitoring of progress in doctoral theses, the recruitment of doctoral candidates and the employability of graduates from collaborative doctoral programmes.

The workshop gathered 33 experts (40% from Switzerland, 60% rest of Europe) from universities, businesses (both large and small) and other organisations in the higher education sector including EURODOC and Vitae. Six companies from the business sector and three doctoral candidates also contributed to the workshop sessions. The presence and active participation of persons from different sectors enriched the dialogue regarding the advantages and concerns of these types of doctoral programmes. A final session, open to all EPFL doctoral candidates, professors and research staff was, held at the Rolex Learning Centre on the EPFL campus, which included a ceremony for this year’s graduates. EPFL President, Professor Patrick Aebischer, addressed the audience introducing EPFL policies on research and placed doctoral education at the heart of the EPFL research activities.

The next DOC-CAREERS II workshop will be held at the Kaunas University of Technology in Lithuania on 4-5 April 2011.

The DOC-CAREERS II project invites universities to submit case studies of collaborative doctoral programmes that can be brought into the discussions.
