The issue focuses on how Member States are pooling resources and aligning research agendas to address the societal challenges facing Europe. The special focus article explores the voluntary "Joint Programming" initiative by the Member States to agree on common research strategies in key areas that matter to citizens. This edition also presents the views of the ERA Stakeholder Organisations, such as EUA, that will play a central role in the future of European science.

Directorate-General for Research and Innovation (DG RTD) launches a consultation on “Research Infrastructure long-term sustainability”

The European Commission’s DG RTD has recently launched an online consultation on “Research Infrastructure (RI) long-term sustainability” with the aim of collecting stakeholders’ views on the issues which need to be addressed to ensure the long-term sustainability of RI and to identify trends and actions that should be reviewed at regional, national and European levels.

The online questionnaire addresses a number of “pre-conditions” underpinning the need to find ways to ensure the long-term sustainability of RI, such as scientific excellence, training and access, innovation potential, interaction with industry, socio-economic impact, data management and international cooperation.

EUA is a participant in the DG RTD RI stakeholders’ platform and invites its membership to take part in the survey until 24 January 2016, 12.00 hrs CET in order to represent the interests of the university sector as precisely as possible. The consultation is available online at

Any queries regarding the survey can be addressed to RTD-RI-LTS@ec.europa.eu
