The EUA Council for Doctoral Education (EUA-CDE) is pleased to announce its 10th thematic workshop. Entitled “Ethics and integrity in doctoral education and research training,” the event will be hosted by the Universidade Nova de Lisboa in Portugal on 18 and 19 January 2017. For the occasion, EUA has launched a call for presentations linked to the workshop theme that will be given in parallel paper sessions during the first day of the event.
EUA-CDE has frequently highlighted that developing an ethos of research integrity is one of the main challenges that have appeared in the academic landscape over the past five years. As social awareness of this issue continues to grow, universities are confronted with new ethical questions linked to digitalisation. Moreover, the increasing pressure on young researchers to publish has started to impact and compromise good practices in research conduct.
The EUA-CDE thematic workshop will promote an exchange of ideas on the shared responsibility of staff on all institutional levels to train young researchers in good research ethics and integrity. While supervisors will continue to play a key role in passing on good research conduct, there is a clear need for a more structured approach that is supported by university leadership and implemented by management and supporting staff. This includes the availability of training courses, a supportive work environment and conducive institutional strategies.
The thematic workshop is open exclusively to EUA-CDE members. It brings together and promotes exchange among university leaders, vice-rectors, deans and heads of doctoral schools, researchers, administrators and other stakeholders interested in the development of doctoral education. The workshop is a forum for discussing new and exciting ideas in the field of doctoral education, sharing experiences, mutual learning and building new partnerships and collaborations during various networking opportunities.
