The 15th General Conference of the International Association of Universities (IAU) took place from 13 to 16 November 2016 at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand.
Under the theme “Higher Education: A catalyst for innovative and sustainable societies,” the event focused on sharing strategies and practices that demonstrate how universities can contribute to the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
As EUA is an IAU member, Michael Gaebel, Director of EUA’s Higher Education Policy Unit, participated in the event. He took part in a discussion on Europe’s experiences with the Bologna Process, and the regional higher education integration process in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
The Magna Charter Observatory organised a session pointing to the wider range of different challenges that university autonomy is facing.
During the conference, IAU members elected their new President and Administrative Board. Pam Fredman, Rector of the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, was elected the first woman to lead the Association, and will head IAU until 2020. Fredman is a former member of the EUA Council and former Chair of the Board of Association of Swedish Higher Education. Leadership from several other EUA member and partner institutions were elected to the IAU Board. EUA is pleased to congratulate them on this occasion.
