The German Rectors’ Conference (HRK), an EUA member, held a strategy day in Brussels for German university leaders on 24 January 2017.
The event, “The knowledge triangle in action? Universities and the EU policies of research, innovation and education,” gathered German and other European leaders and stakeholders from the sector, as well as politicians and policy makers.
EUA President Rolf Tarrach participated in the event, speaking in a panel session on “Universities in the centre of the knowledge triangle – How can the EU strengthen the links between education, research and innovation?” During the discussion, Tarrach pointed out that, in reality, the research and education functions of universities are already quite entangled and that the links should be indeed strengthened. Tarrach also participated in the subsequent public debate moderated by HRK President Horst Hippler on “Learn, discover, invent! A strong Europe needs a European Education, Research and Innovation Union.”
Other main topics addressed included the Ninth Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, as well as the European Research Council and the European Innovation Council and how to successfully promote research and innovation excellence.
