EUA statement against Trump’s travel ban receives wide support
09 February 2017
EUA issued a statement on 30 January 2017 calling on US President Donald Trump to rethink or recall a controversial executive order that immediately and unnecessary affected the movement of international researchers, university faculty and students from seven Muslim-majority countries.
The order, key parts of which are currently blocked by a federal district judge’s ruling, continues to unfairly disrupt individual lives and is potentially damaging to the free flow of people and ideas that is paramount in higher education and research, as well as for a knowledge-based society.
The statement gained wide support in the higher education community. Universities wishing to support EUA’s statement can write to firstname.lastname@example.org or connect with the Association through social media.
EUA has also joined some 40 major European organisations involved in science in signing an open letter to European governments and the presidents of the EU Council and Commission asking them to uphold the principles and values that underpin scientific progress and to work with the US administration to maintain a global science system based on these principles.
