EUA, CESAER, LERU and Science Europe call for new momentum for the ERA

23 March 2017

EUA has joined forces with three other key representative organisations of European universities and research-performing and -funding institutions to congratulate the European institutions on the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome and to call upon them on this occasion to overcome complacency, to take responsibility, and to provide new momentum, dynamism and equity to the European Research Area (ERA).

Acknowledging past achievements and concerned about current threats, EUA together with the Conference of European Schools for Advanced Engineering Education and Research (CESAER), the League of European Research Universities (LERU) and Science Europe, signed a declaration addressed to EU leadership offering a contribution to the debate on the future of Europe.

The declaration states that more Europe and a better Europe are needed and that the ERA must be realised fully in order to safeguard the boundary conditions enabling us to contribute to solving the grand societal challenges and to achieving the sustainable development goals. It also points out the need to realise a stronger brand, set more ambitious priorities for the ERA and the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) and open them up beyond Europe, and, finally, invest more into knowledge.
