New European Code for Research Integrity

06 April 2017

ALLEA, the Federation of European Academies of Sciences and Humanities, published a new European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity on 24 March 2017. This meets the wish of EU Research Commissioner Carlos Moedas to renew the integrity framework used in the Horizon 2020 Model Grant Agreement. EUA has given extensive input to the Code through its response to ALLEA’s first draft.

The new Code is a step forward from the previous framework, being clearer in its wording and, importantly, in recognising the institutional responsibilities for research integrity - for example in the training of early stage researchers. This corresponds well to the ongoing activities of EUA in the area, particularly the work of the EUA Council on Doctoral Education, which held a thematic workshop about ethics and integrity training in January 2017.

The Code could possibly be part of the Model Grant Agreement for Horizon 2020 and should be taken into account for future calls under the programme. Moreover, the Code contains ideas for good first steps when developing policies at the institutional level.
