EUA 2018 Annual Conference programme is now available!

18 January 2018

EUA is pleased to announce the programme for the EUA Annual Conference, which will take place on 5- 6 April 2018, hosted by the University of Zurich in Switzerland.

Under the title ‘Engaged and responsible universities shaping Europe’, the conference will focus on the societal mission of universities and will provide participants with an opportunity to explore how universities across Europe demonstrate their social responsibility by ensuring that their activities contribute to shaping society at large. The conference will highlight the pivotal role that universities play in generating knowledge, developing intercultural understanding and fostering civic engagement through their core missions.

The keynote presentation will be given by Ulrike Felt (University of Vienna) who will reflect on how the relationship between universities and society has changed and how universities are taking an active role in developing knowledge societies. University leaders and policy makers, including David Sweeney (HEFCE), will discuss the role of public policies in defining and facilitating universities’ social responsibility and societal engagement agenda. In the closing plenary session, a panel of speakers from universities, business and research, including Hilligje van’t Land (IAU) will discuss how universities as organisations can respond to current societal challenges in Europe.

A series of breakout sessions will provide participants with opportunities to explore different aspects of the societal mission of European universities, including social inclusiveness and diversity in higher education, employability of graduates and lifelong learning, the societal impact of Open Science, universities’ stake in regional innovation ecosystems, as well as their role in upholding academic values, supporting evidence-based policies and involvement in public debate. The post-conference “Hot Topic session” will engage participants in a discussion on citizen science.

Executive heads from EUA member universities are also invited to join the Leadership Roundtable. This will take place immediately before the Annual Conference and will be used as a forum to discuss strategic approaches to developing the social responsibility of European universities.
