EUA calls on members to submit nominations for EUA President and Board

05 February 2018

The European University Association has opened a call for candidates, open to rectors and presidents of EUA individual full and collective full members with an interest in being nominated as the next EUA President or for one of five Board member positions to be filled for the period 2019-2023. EUA calls on all members to propose strong candidates for these positions in order to take the Association forward.

All nominations should be sent to nominations.committee@eua.be by 9 April 2018, and should include a short CV of no more than 2 pages. Interested candidates will be expected to participate in an interview in Brussels in May-June 2018. The elections will take place at the EUA General Assembly in Paris on 11 April 2019. The new Board members will take office directly after the elections, while the new President will take office in June/July 2019.

The terms of the current President, Professor Rolf Tarrach, former President of the University of Luxembourg, and of the following five Board members will end in 2019:

  • Martine Rahier, former Rector, University of Neuchâtel (CH) – Vice-President
  • Wiesław Banyś, Rector, University of Silesia in Katowice (PL)
  • Holger Burckhart, Rector, University of Siegen (DE)
  • Jean Chambaz, President, Sorbonne Université (FR)
  • Mari Sundli Tveit, Rector, Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NO)

The following three Board members were elected in 2017 and will serve until 2021:

  • Paul Boyle, Vice-Chancellor, University of Leicester (UK) – Vice-President
  • Hana Machková, Rector, University of Economics, Prague (CZ)
  • Michael Murphy, former President, University College Cork (IE)

In making nominations, members are asked to bear in mind that the EUA President and Board members must reflect the cultural and geographical diversity of Europe, and that the Board must be balanced in terms of gender, age and academic discipline. In addition, there is a statutory requirement that there can be only one Board member per country, and that four of the eight Board members must be active rectors at the time of their election. Read the detailed criteria.
