The European University Association (EUA) welcomes the European Parliament’s vote on 26 October 2016 in favour of an increased budget for the EU’s flagship research and innovation programme Horizon 2020. EUA is pleased that the Parliament upholds its commitment to protect the programme from cuts related to the European Fund for Strategic Investment (EFSI) and recognises its value in promoting growth and job creation.

On 12 and 13 October 2016, the first Sino-European Forum on Education Policy Think Tanks took place in Beijing, China. It was organised in partnership with EUA by the Chinese Education Ministry’s National Center for Education Development Research (NCEDR).

The UK has provided an important update on the status of EU students in connection to Brexit. EU students applying for the 2017-2018 academic year in universities in England, Scotland and Wales will be eligible for student loans and grants for the duration of their degree course (Northern Ireland has not yet issued such assurance). The arrangement also guarantees that these students, who may be in the midst of their studies when the UK leaves the EU, will still be able to finish on the same terms as students from the UK.

EUA and the USTREAM project partners (Universities for autonomous, strategic and efficient management) are pleased to invite universities to participate in a newly-launched online survey on efficient university management.

On 14 October 2016, the Steering Committee of the EUA Council for Doctoral Education (EUA-CDE) met in Zurich to welcome its new chair and four new members. Luke Georghiou, Vice-President for Research and Innovation at the University of Manchester, is the new EUA-CDE chair.

On 13 and 14 October 2016, the workshop on “Universities as motors of innovation in Central and Eastern Europe” took place in Warsaw, Poland back-to-back with the second meeting of EUA’s Expert Group on Research and Innovation Strategies for Smart Specialisation (RIS3). The workshop was jointly organised by EUA and CRASP (Polish Rectors’ Conference) and was hosted by the University of Warsaw.
