    Last week during its Plenary Session in Strasbourg, members of the European Parliament (EP) approved the next long-term EU budget (multiannual financial framework) for 2014-2020, which includes the next EU programmes for research and innovation (Horizon 2020) and for education (Erasmus+). In separate votes, MEPs also approved the different legislative packages for Horizon 2020 and Erasmus+, paving the way for both programmes to begin as planned in 2014.

    Earlier this week, the Education, Youth and Culture Committee of the Council of the EU (which brings together education ministers) met in Brussels. During the education part of the meeting, they adopted conclusions on the: “global dimension of European higher education” and “effective leadership in education”. Meanwhile, the European Commission announced that, together with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), it was launching a new online self-assessment tool for universities to measure how entrepreneurial they are.

    The Ministry of Education in Montenegro has commissioned EUA’s Institutional Evaluation Programme (IEP) to carry out coordinated evaluations of higher education institutions during 2013-2014. These evaluations are funded by a broader World Bank supported project entitled “Higher Education and Research for Innovation and Competitiveness” (HERIC), with the overall objective to strengthen the quality and relevance of higher education and research in Montenegro.

    The European University Association is launching the 7th in the series of its flagship TRENDS projects, which undertake a detailed analysis and mapping of developments in Europe's changing higher education landscape.

    Last week the second country workshop in the framework of the ATHENA project on fostering sustainable and autonomous higher education systems in the Eastern Neighbouring Area of the EU took place in Kiev, Ukraine.

    Last week, EUA Secretary General, Lesley Wilson, participated in the first roundtable meeting of directors of higher education centres and programmes in Shanghai, which considered “the role of higher education research and training centres in today’s complex tertiary education environment”.
