Five years after the Salzburg Principles were launched as the foundation for the reform of doctoral education in Europe, the EUA Council for Doctoral Education (EUA-CDE) has been gathering information about the experiences of Europe’s universities in establishing doctoral schools and structured programmes.

EUA organised the second EUIMA – Full Costing country workshop this week (27 September) at Ankara University which focussed on the implementation of full costing at Turkish universities. This second event was co-organised with The Council of Higher Education of Turkey (YÖK), which had been selected due to its capacity and position in the Turkish higher education system to drive the implementation of full costing in Turkey.

On 20-21 September the first workshop of the new DOC-CAREERS II project took place at the Dublin Institute of Technology, Ireland. DOC-CAREERS II workshops discuss new approaches in collaborative doctoral training with a strong regional focus, both from the host university region and other European regions, and the ways and means available to improve university-business/external partner cooperation.

EUA has been invited, as one of the principal representative bodies of the European scientific community, to submit a list of potential candidates to serve on the ERC Scientific Council, the governing body of the European Research Council.

To highlight different areas of its work, EUA organised and took part in five sessions at the 22nd meeting of the European Association for International Education (EAIE) that took place in Nantes, France, on 15-18 September 2010.

The Committee of the Regions and the European Parliament Committee for Regional Development have recently published opinions on the current debate on the simplification of European research funding programmes, which primarily concerns the review of FP7 and the preparation of FP8.
