EUA and HUMANE (the Heads of University Management and Administration Network in Europe) are jointly organising a seminar focusing on the impact that changing higher education funding modalities and merger processes, as funding efficiency measures, have on university management. The event is hosted by the University of Aveiro, Portugal, from 22 to 23 November 2013.

Quality assurance staff from universities in the Western Balkans gathered in Korca, Albania, from 5 to 6 September, to discuss the role of central quality assurance units, as well as the tools they use. The workshop was organised in the framework of the EUA-led “Empowering Universities to fulfil their responsibility for Quality Assurance” (EUREQA) project.

EUA – together with its partners ENQA, ESU and EURASHE – is pleased to announce that registration is still open for the 8th edition of the European Quality Assurance Forum (EQAF), which will take place at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, from 21 to 23 November 2013.

Last week the European Commission launched a new “indicator of innovation output” which aims to measure the extent to which “ideas from innovative sectors are able to reach the market” and will complement the Commission's Innovation Union Scoreboard and Summary Innovation Index which assess the innovation performance of member states and the EU more widely. Meanwhile, the Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the EU held a conference on “European Higher Education in the World” and the European Parliament adopted two resolutions in relation to tackling youth unemployment and the implementation of the EU Youth Strategy.

Following the political agreements reached in June on the next long-term programmes for research and innovation (Horizon 2020) and education and training (Erasmus+), preparations are now underway for the formal adoption of the Horizon 2020 and Erasmus+ legislative packages by the European Parliament and Council, which is likely to take place in the coming weeks. The overall budget framework for 2014-2020 (Multiannual Financial Framework) must also be formally approved so that both programmes can begin as planned at the beginning of 2014.

EUA is deeply saddened to learn of the recent death of Professor Lucy Smith, former Rector of the University of Oslo (Norway).
