    EUA monitors European-level developments at the interface of the Bologna Process and the EC Directive 2005/36/EC on the recognition of professional qualifications, which is currently under review.

    Registrations are open for the first major bi-regional conference of university associations and their members from Latin America and Europe. Part of the ALFA PUENTES project, this event will take place in Sao Paulo, Brazil, from 11 to 14 November 2012.

    This week, as Cyprus took over the Presidency of the Council of the EU, the European Commission launched a new ‘dialogue’ with Southern Mediterranean countries on higher education. Meanwhile, the Eurydice Network has published an updated overview of the organisation of academic calendars in Europe.

    Over the last two weeks, the European Commission has tabled a new strategy for Key Enabling Technologies such as nanotechnology, micro- and nanoelectronics including semiconductors, advanced materials, biotechnology and photonics. As part of its aim to modernise State Aid Control, the Commission is also holding a public consultation on the General Block Exemption Regulation.

    In the context of the EU-facilitated Pristina-Belgrade dialogue, EUA last year agreed to assist in the process of certifying diplomas issued by universities in Kosovo or in Serbia as a means of facilitating mobility in the region for the purposes of further education and/or public employment. On 26 June, an EUA-established Academic Committee certified the first 73 diplomas from Kosovo having verified that these diplomas were correctly issued by authorised institutions and were in line with European best practice, thus including detailed transcripts of records and the required Diploma Supplements.

    EUA held its first Forum dedicated to higher education funding at the University of Salzburg, Austria, from 11 to 12 June. The stakeholder platform, the first of its kind, brought together university leaders and managers, researchers, funders and policy makers from 33 countries to discuss a series of issues related to university funding.
