    In July, the European Parliament elected Jean-Claude Juncker as the next President of the European Commission to take office on 1 November 2014 for a five-year term.

    Over the summer the European Commission has presented details of the “Fast Track to Innovation” (FTI) pilot action and has released its latest statistics from the Erasmus programme.

    EUA’s Institutional Evaluation Programme (IEP) is celebrating its twentieth anniversary this year, a milestone that will be marked by an event in Brussels. Hosted by the Representation of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia to the European Union, the event will take place on Thursday 18 September 2014, from 14.30 until 17.30, and will be followed by a drinks reception. Registrations for the event will be open until 11 September 2014.

    EUA recently participated in a two-day event (14-15 July) in Madrid, organised by the Spanish Rectors’ Conference (CRUE) and the CYD Foundation, focusing on the role of universities in smart specialisation strategies for innovation.

    Thirty rectors and presidents of higher education institutions from Canada, the US and Europe gathered in Toronto, Canada, from 25 to 27 June for the 14th Transatlantic Dialogue (TAD), a bi-regional leadership event that has underpinned EUA’s cooperation with the American Council on Education (ACE) and the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) for many years.

    At its meeting on 12 June 2014, the EUA Research Policy Working Group (RPWG), chaired by EUA Vice-President Professor David Drewry, gave particular attention to the topic of doctoral education.
