    In July 2012, the European University Association (EUA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the European Commission DG Research and Innovation, and a Joint Statement with the Commission and four other European stakeholder organisations (EARTO, LERU, NordForsk and Science Europe), committing the signatories to working in partnership towards achieving the European Research Area (ERA) goals.


    Approximately 120 university leaders and members of national university associations from 32 countries gathered in Cartagena, Colombia, from 2 to 4 December for the second major bi-regional conference of the ALFA PUENTES project entitled “A Europe-Latin America Partnership for Innovative, Responsive and Sustainable Universities”.


    As part of the “Designing strategies for efficient funding of higher education in Europe (DEFINE)” project, the European University Association (EUA) has been collecting information and data from national rectors’ conferences/university associations on the different public funding modalities and efficiency measures (including performance-based funding, concentration measures and excellence schemes) in place in Europe and their impact on universities.


    EUA has published a call for presentations from EUA member institutions for three working groups during its next Annual Conference. The conference “Changing landscapes in learning and teaching” will take place at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) in Belgium from 3 to 4 April 2014.


    Following the recent approval of the Horizon 2020 research programme (2014-2020) by the European Parliament and Council of the EU (member states), the European Commission has published on 11 December the first calls for proposals under Horizon 2020.


    The European Commission last week unveiled more details about the new Erasmus+ Programme including information regarding the first calls for proposals and a detailed programme guide. Following its adoption by the European Parliament and the Council of the EU, the programme will now officially start in January 2014 and will provide funding for activities in the fields of education, training, youth and sports until 2020.
