EUA Board elections: Meet the nominees

EUA members will have the opportunity to elect three new Board members at the 2017 General Assembly, which will take place on the morning of 6 April before the start of the EUA Annual Conference, hosted by the University of Bergen in Norway.  
Home (Copyright Bergen Reiselivslag Robin Strand - new Board members will replace David Drewry, Gülay Dogu Barbarosoglu and Stefano Paleari, whose terms will be ending at the conference. The five nominees are as follows:

Paul Boyle is the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Leicester in the UK. He has served as Chief Executive of the Economic and Social Research Council, the International Champion of Research Councils UK, and President of Science Europe. 

Hana Machková is the Rector of the University of Economics in Prague, Czech Republic. She is also the President of the Scientific Board of the University of Economics and Director of the French-Czech Institute of Management.

Michael Murphy is the Former President of University College Cork in Ireland. He has served as Vice-Chancellor of the National University of Ireland, Chair of the Irish Universities Association and Chair of Universities Ireland.

Giuseppe Novelli is the Rector of the University of Rome, Tor Vergata in Italy where he also serves as Professor of Human Genetics in the Department of Biopathology. Novelli is also the Vice President of the Conference of Italian University Rectors.

Thomas Wilhelmsson is the Chancellor of the University of Helsinki in Finland where he is also Professor of Civil and Commercial Law. Wilhelmsson has served as Vice Chair of the Finnish University Association and President of the Scandinavian University Association.

Registration is open for both the EUA General Assembly and Annual Conference. More information on the conference, which will take place from 6 to 7 April 2017 under the theme “Autonomy and freedom: The future sustainability of universities,” can be found on the event webpage. All documentation for the General Assembly will be available on the EUA extranet before the meeting.

European science organisations call on leaders to address Trump and global science

Some 40 major European organisations involved in science, including EUA, have issued an open letter to European governments and the presidents of the EU Council and Commission asking them to uphold the principles and values that underpin scientific progress and to work with the US administration to maintain a global science system based on these principles.

EUA has worked with four of its key partners to produce a new document that provides support and information for institutions and quality assurance agencies that engage in cross-border quality assurance.

EUA thematic peer groups on learning and teaching kick off

On 22 February 2017, the four new EUA thematic peer groups on learning and teaching in European universities launched their work with a meeting among the group coordinators. Held in Brussels, the kick-off session focused on defining the aims and tasks of the different groups.

EUA contributes to European Parliament opinion on EFSI

Conclusions from an EUA report on the European Fund for Strategic Investments (EFSI) have been included in a European Parliament opinion on the loan scheme. EUA has consistently pointed out that money for Horizon 2020 should not be diverted to fund EFSI and that the scheme does not benefit universities. 

RPWG discusses EUA vision for next Framework Programme with European Commission

On 17 February 2017, the EUA Research Policy Working Group (RPWG) took forward the EUA vision paper for the next EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (FP9) and discussed its outlines with the European Commission.

Those wishing to participate in the 4th UNI-SET Energy Clustering Event are still in time to register. Hosted by Imperial College London on 27 and 28 March 2017, the event theme is “Universities in the Energy Transition: Focus on Sustainable Transport and Carbon Capture, Storage & Use.” The deadline to register is 13 March 2017.

The EUA Council for Doctoral Education (EUA-CDE) is pleased to invite member institutions to answer calls to host its 2018 thematic workshop and annual meeting. EUA-CDE is the European voice for doctoral education, actively promoting collaboration and exchange of good practices on issues of common concern.

European Parliament adopts report on European Cloud Initiative

On 16 February 2017, the European Parliament adopted its report on the European Cloud Initiative. Proposed by the European Commission, the Cloud Initiative aims to strengthen Europe's position in data-driven innovation, improve its competitiveness and cohesion, and help create a Digital Single Market in Europe.
