Mobilising Europe’s universities for Smart Specialisation

Around 300 representatives from universities, national and regional authorities, the EU institutions, and other research and innovation stakeholders gathered last week for a high-level conference in Brussels entitled “Mobilising Europe’s universities for Smart Specialisation”.

 

© European Commission Joint Research Centre - Nadia SpiritoConvened by the Joint Research Centre’s (JRC) Smart Specialisation Platform (S3 Platform), DG REGIO and EUA, the conference provided the opportunity to discuss and share the results of the work that has been carried out by the S3 Platform and EUA on the role of universities in the definition and implementation of Smart Specialisation Strategies.  It also provided a platform to share best practice and put forward ways to further enhance the role of universities in this area.

 

Under the new EU Cohesion Policy framework (2014-2020), Smart Specialisation is an “ex-ante conditionality”. This means that every member state and region will have to have such a strategy in place before they can receive EU financial support through the Structural Funds for their planned innovation measures, particularly in relation to strengthening research, technological development and innovation.

Report from the Second Arab-Euro Higher Education Conference

More than 250 participants, including 150 Arab and European university leaders, gathered from 10-12 June for the Second Arab-Euro Conference on Higher Education (AECHE) in Amman, Jordan. The conference, on the topic “Strengthening Arab-Euro University Collaboration: The importance of regional mobility”, was hosted by the Princess Sumaya University for Technology (PSUT) and organised jointly by the Association of Arab Universities (AARU), the European University Association (EUA) and the University of Barcelona.

EUA’s Institutional Evaluation Programme (IEP) is celebrating its twentieth anniversary this year, a milestone that will be marked by an event in Brussels. Hosted by the Representation of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia to the European Union, the event will take place on Thursday 18 September 2014, from 14.30 until 17.30, and will be followed by a drinks reception.
