EUA Newsletter 19   14 November 2014


It has been a busy last few weeks in terms of EUA activities which have covered a broad range of issues of relevance for European universities. These activities, outlined in this latest newsletter, include the publication of a new report on the role of university rankings in institutional processes and strategies and a new online self-assessment tool for university-business research partnerships. Such initiatives are designed to support universities in their daily activities.


This newsletter also includes articles looking at: the completion of EUA’s Institutional Evaluation Programme (IEP) evaluations of 70 Romanian higher education institutions, and the recent presentation of the final system-level report; EUA’s contribution to the European Commission’s public consultation on the Europe 2020 strategy; and developments with the EUA-led ATHENA project which aims to contribute to the development, reform and modernisation of higher education systems in Armenia, Moldova and Ukraine.

New EUA report on rankings - 'Rankings in Institutional Strategies and Processes: Impact or Illusion?' 

On 6 November, EUA published a new report entitled “Rankings in Institutional Strategies and Processes (RISP): Impact or Illusion?”. The publication, presented at an event in Brussels, is the outcome of a 2.5 year EUA-led project* which has carried out the first pan-European study of the impact and influence of rankings on European higher education institutions.

EUA takes forward work on university-business research collaborations with new online tool & publications

EUA has launched a new online self-assessment tool for university-business research partnerships which is designed to help universities, companies and other external partners, to assess, reflect upon and take forward their collaborative research.

IEP concludes evaluations of 70 HE institutions in Romania and presents system-level report

EUA’s Institutional Evaluation Programme (IEP) has recently completed one of its largest external evaluations exercises. 70 Romanian higher education institutions (HEI) have taken part in IEP evaluations over the last three years in the framework of two projects managed by UEFISCDI, the Executive Agency for Higher Education, Research, Development and Innovation Funding of the Romanian Ministry of Education, Research, Youth and Sport.

ATHENA training seminar focuses on university governance models

The second training seminar of the EUA-led ATHENA project, which aims to contribute to the development, reform and modernisation of higher education systems in Armenia, Moldova and Ukraine took place last week (3-4 November) in Portugal. The event was co-hosted by the University of Coimbra and the Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra. The main focus of discussions was governance and autonomy reforms in the higher education sector, a topical issue as some European countries seek to adapt university governance models to an evolving and increasingly competitive environment.

EUA’s contribution to the Europe 2020 consultation

Following its 2011 statement on the EU’s “Innovation Union” Flagship Initiative, entitled “Smart People for Smart Growth”, EUA has recently submitted a contribution to the European Commission’s (EC) public consultation on the Europe 2020 strategy, the EU's long-term growth and jobs plan.

EUA, the European Industrial Research Management Association (EIRMA), and the European Association of Research and Technology Organisations (EARTO) are jointly organising a workshop on “Responsible Partnering: Science and Business Research Collaboration in Europe Today” that will take place in Brussels on 3 December 2014.

EUA, in collaboration with EFQUEL, is organising two webinars for members on the topic of recognition of open learning in higher education that will take place on the afternoons of 19 November and 17 December (on both days,14.00-15.10).
