EUA announces candidates for election of new President and Board members

On 30 January the Council of the European University Association (EUA) agreed to nominate candidates for the election of its President and five new Board Members who will be elected at the association’s General Assembly, prior to the Annual Conference in Antwerp (16-17 April 2015).

The candidate for the next EUA Presidency is Professor Rolf Tarrach, former President of the University of Luxembourg.


The 12 candidates for the EUA Board officially nominated by EUA Council during its meeting in Brussels are:


  • Wieslaw Banys, Rector of the University of Silesia in Katowice and President of the Conference of Rectors of Academic Schools, Poland
  • Holger Burckhart, Rector of the University of Siegen, Germany
  • Jean Chambaz, President of Pierre and Marie Curie University (Paris 6), France
  • Francesc Xavier Grau, former Rector of Rovira I Virgili University, Tarragona, Spain 
  • Václav Hampl, former Rector of Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic (standing for re-election)
  • Volli Kalm, Rector of the University of Tartu, Estonia
  • Karin Markides, President and CEO of Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden
  • Martine Rahier, Rector of the University of Neuchâtel and President of swissuniversities, Switzerland
  • Bernard Rentier, former Rector of the University of Liège, Belgium
  • Mari Sundli Tveit, Rector of the Norwegian University of Life Sciences, Norway
  • Alain Verschoren, Rector of the University of Antwerp, Belgium
  • Joseph H. H. Weiler, President of the European University Institute, Florence

The five candidates with the highest number of votes will be elected to replace five outgoing members of the current Board and will serve for four years (2015-2019).

European Commissioner for Education Tibor Navracsics meets with EUA Board

EUA was pleased to welcome European Commissioner Tibor Navracsics to its secretariat in Brussels on 29 January, at the beginning of the Commissioner’s term of office. The meeting, with EUA’s President and Board, focused on trends and priorities in higher education. 

Given his own academic background, Commissioner Navracsics underlined his eagerness to further deepen cooperation between the European Commission and EUA, as the voice of the European higher education sector.

EUA Council statement on TTIP and TISA

During its Council meeting of 30th January in Brussels, EUA unanimously adopted a statement on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) and the Trade in Services Agreement (TiSA). It warns that TTIP and TiSA cast into doubt the ability of national and regional authorities to determine the nature of their Higher Education provisions and calls on the EU to make no commitments in the fields of higher and adult education.

Principles of State Responsibility to Protect Higher Education

At its Council meeting on 30th January EUA endorsed the Principles of State Responsibility to Protect Higher Education campaign promoted by the Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack (GCPEA). The initiative articulates a need for affirmative, public recognition of the ongoing and widespread problem of attacks on higher education.

EUA welcomes new members

During last week’s EUA Council meeting in Brussels, EUA welcomed Hedmark University College (Norway) as an individual full member. Goce Delcev University of Stip (former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia) and Ualikhanov Kokshetau State University (Kazakhstan) became individual associate members. Meanwhile, the Agency for Quality Assurance and Accreditation Austria has become an affiliate.

The future of the Bologna Process

The Yerevan Conference in May this year will conclude another round of the Bologna Process. Given the Bologna Follow-up Group’s role in finalising documents that will be adopted by Ministers, the discussion on the future of the Process is particularly high on EUA’s agenda.

Events News

EUA-CDE Workshop on Regional Engagement and Doctoral Education

On 22-23 January, around 80 delegates gathered in Marseille at Aix-Marseille University for the 8th EUA-CDE thematic workshop to discuss the role universities play in developing their regions. The event was based on the premise that, as well as ensuring local employers have a pool of skilled candidates who can facilitate an exchange of knowledge with society, universities are also in a good position to establish initiatives and dialogue with regional authorities.

EUA 2nd Funding Forum general report

Following EUA’s second Funding Forum, held at the University of Bergamo in October 2014, General Rapporteur Liviu Matei authored an analytical summary of the discussions, highlighting the main elements debated by the 250 stakeholders participating in the event.
