Mapping University Mobility of Staff and Students (MAUNIMO) (2010-2012)

Increasing the quantity of mobile students and staff, and at the same time increasing the quality of that mobility, is a long-term priority for Europe’s universities as well as for their staff and students, and for the many and varied agencies which support mobility. Although mobility depends on HEIs, many of the framework conditions are set by others – by inter-governmental agreements and governments in particular, since they generally control legal frameworks and funding conditions. Nor are the facts fully clear: Europe’s data in this area are incomplete, and data from one country are hardly ever comparable with those from another.

Since the area is important to HEI’s, EUA has set up a consortium with the Universities of Marburg, Oslo, Swansea and Trento to run the MAUNIMO project and thereby improve the understanding of mobility. The project is funded under the European Union Lifelong Learning Programme and will last from October 2010 until September 2012.

Project description and objectives:

Staff and student mobility depends ultimately on institutional strategy; the intention of the project is to support HEIs in making better strategic decisions about internationalisation and about mobility in particular. Such decisions are difficult at present, since the nature and extent of mobility are often not completely known. The most concrete output of the MAUNIMO project will thus be a Mobility Mapping Tool, to help institutions understand better who is moving where, and for what purpose.

Project methodology:

The project aims at developing and testing a Mobility Mapping Tool. The first phase will develop the project; the second will test it in 30 selected universities; and the third phase will be devoted to its dissemination to a broader audience.

A Coordination Team with representatives from the 5 consortium partners is coordinating and implement the project. In addition, a Mobility Sounding Board has been established to serve as an advisory body to the project and to strengthen the quality and relevance of the project’s activities.
