EUA Learning & Teaching Initiative


EUA’s series of TRENDS reports on higher education in Europe show that while progress has been made through the implementation of structural reforms and the enhancement of institutional frameworks, there is a need to pay more attention to the process of learning and teaching itself. Therefore, EUA is extending its activities on learning and teaching in 2017 with the aim to:

  • Identify and better engage with relevant university communities/those in charge of learning and teaching at institutional level, and dedicated networks and organisations;
  • Provide EUA members with opportunities for peer-learning and exchange of good practice;
  • Thus strengthen the voice of EUA in ongoing policy debates addressing the quality and relevance of universities by providing direct feedback from members on changing learning landscapes.

In this context, EUA organises the first European Learning & Teaching Forum (hereinafter the Forum) that will facilitate the exchange of experience on learning and teaching in higher education among EUA members and other interested stakeholders. In order to prepare and complement the Forum, EUA will also organise thematic peer groups on learning and teaching.

EUA organises thematic peer groups on learning and teaching to strengthen the bottom-up approach in engaging the European universities, to foster the community building, and to complement the Forum.

The main objectives of the thematic peer groups are:

  • To identify core principles for successful learning and teaching across Europe by taking into account the changing higher education environment
  • To exchange good practices in various organisational, educational and qualitative aspects of learning and teaching
  • To contribute to the enhancement of learning and teaching at European universities.

Thematic peer groups will be active from 1 February to 30 September 2017 and will cover the following four themes: 

  • Addressing larger and more diverse student bodies ensuring student success
  • Empowering students for their future professional life and civic engagement
  • Building a link between research and teaching missions of the university
  • Fostering engagement in developing learning and teaching

An open call has been launched to engage EUA member universities in the thematic peer groups. The Call for Participation is available here and is open until 16 January 2017 (extended to 23 January 2017).

The first Forum will be organised on 28-29 September 2017 by EUA in collaboration with the Conférence des présidents d’université (CPU) and hosted by University Pierre and Marie Curie (UPMC) in Paris, France.

The primary target audience of the Forum are vice-rectors for academic affairs, deans, programme directors, academic staff in the universities, and researchers in the field of learning and teaching. The Forum will also be open for participation by policy-makers and other stakeholders in higher education.

Using the experience from the European Learning & Teaching Forum, thematic peer groups, and other related activities, EUA aims to prepare and publish in late 2017 a policy position paper on learning and teaching. The paper will provide a framework for EUA’s future activities in this area, and feed into the discussions of the Bologna Follow-up Group and the upcoming Ministerial meeting and communiqué 2018.
